Hadrian's Wall & Hexham
Just two miles away, Vindolanda is one of Britain’s most important Roman sites, with excavated fort remains and a museum, home to some of the oldest surviving handwritten documents in Britain. A little further along Hadrian’s Wall, Housesteads Roman Fort is one of the best-preserved Roman forts in the country, set high above the surrounding countryside with far-reaching views over Northumberland National Park. Nearby, The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre brings the landscape to life through interactive exhibitions and a rooftop viewpoint, and makes a good starting point for walks, with a café and visitor information on site. Five miles away, the market town of Hexham is centred around Hexham Abbey and known for its independent shops, cafés and regular markets, while nearby Chesters Roman Fort sits beside the River North Tyne and is home to the best-preserved Roman military bathhouse in the country.
Villages & Countryside
A short drive further, you’ll find quiet villages, woodland walks and picturesque market towns offering another side of Northumberland. Corbridge combines Roman history with independent shops, galleries and cafés, and is home to Corbridge Roman Site and riverside walks along the Tyne. Allen Banks & Staward Gorge, managed by the National Trust, is one of the area’s best woodland walks, following the River East Allen through ancient woodland. A little further south, Blanchland is one of Northumberland’s most picturesque villages, its honey-coloured stone cottages built around the remains of a medieval abbey in the North Pennines National Landscape. To the north, Bellingham sits on the edge of Northumberland National Park and is often considered the gateway to Kielder Water & Forest Park, with independent shops, cafés and riverside walks, and plenty of walking and cycling on its doorstep.

Cities & Forests
Kielder Water & Forest Park offers a full day of exploring, with miles of walking and cycling trails, water-based activities and one of the largest working forests in England. As an official Dark Sky Park, it’s also one of the country’s best places for stargazing. Alternatively, head east to Newcastle upon Tyne, home to iconic bridges over the River Tyne, along with excellent shopping, museums, galleries and restaurants.
History & Heritage
Beamish Museum is an immersive open-air museum, where historic streets, traditional trams and costumed staff bring different eras of North East life to the present day. Or visit the historic city of Durham, home to its cathedral and castle, both part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with winding streets, riverside walks and independent cafes to explore.
Castles
To the north, Alnwick Castle & Gardens makes for a memorable day out. Still home to the Duke of Northumberland, it’s one of England’s finest historic buildings, while the contemporary gardens, including the striking Grand Cascade, are among the country’s most impressive. Further north, Bamburgh Castle sits dramatically on the Northumberland coast, overlooking miles of sandy beach and the sea.

A day exploring this beautiful stretch of coast could include a visit to Bamburgh Castle, one of the country’s most spectacular castle settings, perched high above the beach with panoramic views across the North Sea. Continue north to Holy Island & Lindisfarne, where a tidal causeway leads to a peaceful island steeped in history, with ancient priory ruins, coastal walks and the famous Lindisfarne mead to discover.
