The

RED LION

OF NEWBROUGH

Makes for a handsome retreat

welcome to the red lion

With burning log fires, delicious freshly made food, local real ales, a well stocked wine cellar and a great pub atmosphere the Red Lion makes for a handsome retreat.

Our new Stanegate Room which is situated in part of the pub has recently opened to celebrate all things local to Newbrough. It represents local history along with lots of crafts and artwork by local residents and is a showcase for new and developing local Northumberland talent.

The Red Lion in Newbrough used to be a common or garden pub with flagged floor and open fire, frequented by locals. The menu, if it existed, comprised crisps, pickled eggs and perhaps a cheese and chutney sandwich.

I have popped in occasionally for a half-pint after a walk or to attend a village meeting but never thought of it as a dining destination. The floor and fire remain in the bar but since taking over Andy and Sue have seriously upgraded the food offering.

From a varied menu of freshly cooked main courses four of us chose homemade steak and ale pie, twice cooked cheese souffle, ribeye steak and twice cooked belly pork. All were well presented an unanimously agreed to be excellent. P.S. Being almost local I haven't needed to test the Bed & Breakfast facilities, but when I have directed visitors to the Red Lion they have unfailingly returned enthusiastic about the decor, cleanliness and breakfasts.
